The Cactus Channel-Wooden Boy [HopeStreet Recordings 2013]

From the bowels of an abandoned textiles factory in Brunswick, beneath a sign that advertises a long-defunct karate school, lies the home of HopeStreet Recordings. On a mission to capture the crusty analog soul and funk sound of a bygone era with a hungry new generation of artists, production team Bobzilla and Tristan Ludowyk are hard at work. Armed with an eight track tape machine, some gaffa tape, and classic funk ingenuity, they are always cooking up new delicacies for connoisseurs of the funky and deep.

Wooden Boy was recorded by The Cactus Channel — a ten-piece band from Melbourne, Australia — all born in the 90s and raised on the internet. Yet somehow, this astonishing follow up to last year’s rave-reviewed debut,Haptics, sounds like it could have been recorded in the 1970s, or possibly in the distant future. A timeless, placeless cinematic odyssey, Wooden Boy could have been an alternate soundtrack to Ghost Dog — if Lalo Schifrin and the Meters were collaborating on the RZA’s score. Or maybe Wooden Boy was what happened when Lars Von Trier got invited to direct an episode of Soul Train. What any of it may actually mean is left to the listener’s imagination.

Funk aficionados will hear shades of New York on this record, echoes of El Michel’s taking on Wu Tang, the influence of Budos and Menehan et al. But this is the Generation Z version; both more tempestuous and more introverted. Recorded analog in the digital era, presented faceless in the celebrity era, inexplicably ambiguous in the soundbite era, is this the album the world needs right now? Undoubtedly yes. In a world where the NSA can read the text message that dumped you, what does a person need more than sad soul music from the future? Wooden Boy, baby, Wooden Boy.

New Franco-Scottish pop group Jacques Caramac & The Sweet Generation release their debut single on white & black striped vinyl.

‘It Takes All Sorts…’ is backed with ‘Cadbury’s Voltaire’ on the Everyday Life Recordings label.

With hints of The Fall, 70s Eno and Velvets, Jacques Caramac & The Sweet Generation is Jean- Baptiste Ganivet (bass), Raphael Mura (drums) and Kevin Retoryka (vocals, guitar).

Jacques Caramac & The Sweet Generation has an eye for a (sweet) tooth and a nose for a tune, not to mention a fine line in songcraft, as the coup de grâce that is next year’s debut album will demonstrate.

lyrics
* * * * *

If only these days could bring some light in my life
Through the monitor fence of this virtual world
Where my common friends & I, admire each other
While stripping happiness, bare to the bone.

In the darkest of hours
I’m preparing my traps
‘Cause I am the hunted
In an endless hunt
Like crowds, like drugs
Like friends, like love
This city haunts me
Like a dangerous charm.

I may write this symphony of spoken words
That animates the scenery of your lonely soul
Against the blades of power, against all hope
When the freedom of one will be the freedom of all?

In a country that bleeds
In a city that haunts
While the beat of young drummers is keeping the pulse
Like husbands, like wives
Like children, all done
I’m a black baby dying
In your dangerous arms.

In a labyrinth state
I’m a fugitive chap
Who knows the rich get richer
While the poor get stabbed.
So, when the morning rises,
I may feel a bit scared
But I hide in my garden,
Down memory lane.

For years of black history
I’m eternally cursed
I hang like a target
Of civil disgrace
Now that you see me dying
Now you’ve seen me dead
But in this black and white movie
It all comes to an end.

So, take a moment to think
Who is the richest man?
You or your neighbor
Following the government plan
In a city that stinks
Rot and decay
In a city that sleeps
When I come out and play.

And if the next time
You realize your shadow’s been lost
Blame this black September that
Forever haunts
Your dreams, your life
Your lovers, your hoes
We are all trapped in this game
Of slow decompose.

HEPTOWN RECORDS bring you the new Java Skull 10’’ inch vinyl album "The Devil's Looking For You”.

If you're looking for jungle drums, dirty guitar-riffs, songs about liars, cheats, loose women, horrible places, lost love and necessary evils, this is the record for you.

Farewell.J.R-Health EP [Talking Shop Records 2013]

i just found some treasure.
for my traveling.
ive got that funny feeling in my stomach
*****

i don't know if the moment catches your breath
or you try to breathe through your moments.

"A thought,A mind"
repeat repeat repeat
: the most beautiful multi layered song on repeat,
when you want to stop the pain it keeps reminding you
to go through the process awaiting for another melody
down the brick road
come down grab some of those golden dew ear drops
and on the way up caress your inner drive.

and ill never say goodbye to someone that treats me so
truthfully.....

Enduring a troubled time in his own life, Nick Rayner retreated to somewhere private. Funnelling his feelings into music, Rayner poured the events of the previous few months into song after song.

Then he escaped. Leaving the tapes behind, the songwriter travelled to Ireland while the drums were recorded - remotely - in Australia. Pulled together as a new EP, Nick Rayner is ready to launch his next moniker Farewell J.R.

The material is enticing, intoxicating. There's a beauty here, an adherence to certain traits, formats that you might come to expect from a mature songwriter. However there's also the element of risk, with Farewell J.R. having a raw, untamed delivery with a voice frequently pushed into cracking.

Set to be released on Talking Shop, 'Health' is a deep, probing work which matches melody against distortion, the good times and the bad, the rough with the smooth.

i love you soso so much!

Produced & mixed by Maki (Yierasimos Kypriotis)
Mastered by Nato
Design by Troy Gronsdahl
Drawings by Dagmara Genda

soso is an unorthodox hip hop artist best known for songs that explore family and social histories, personal experience, and place. His latest album is a culmination of the creative strides he has made over the past decade. The writing is more wordy than previous efforts and is laced with idioms, double negatives, and nuance. There are moments of off-kilter crooning. It’s a bit obtuse, but certainly sincere. The album was produced by indie hip hop stalwart and long time collaborator, Maki.
